The Tears - Refugees

Refugees by Suheir Hammad

A video about Refugees set to Suheir Hammad's piece on the K-Salaam hip-hop album. The pictures in this video were not taken by me. I only arranged into an original slideshow. The Dafur pictures were from National Geographic: Surviving Dafur: African Refugee Life I had to do some research, but found out that the New Orleans pictures were taken by a photographer named Jacob Applebaum. Thank you to everyone for the positive feedback on this video. I hope to make many more soon. If I find any comments to be offensive to any group of people, I will delete them.

North Korean Refugees

October 2007 They risk all trying to make it across the North Korean border to China, only to find no guarantee of a better life. At constant risk of being deported, these refugees live a half life in the shadows. "I thought if I came to China life would be better", laments one woman. "I was wrong". Without Chinese language skills, most North Korean refugees remain at risk of being discovered by the police. "The police pay 200 yuan to anyone who discloses the whereabouts of North Koreans", explains one refugee. "That's what I'm most afraid of. I'm always hiding". Easy prey for the unscrupulous, they're forced to do dangerous jobs for little money. "Most North Korean women fall into the hands of human traffickers", states activist Tim Peters. "They're sold into prostitution". Unlike other countries, China classes North Korean refugees as economic migrants. If caught, they face return to Pyongyang and almost certain execution. "North Koreans are being sent back by the hundreds", complains Peters. Without external pressure, the situation for these refugees is unlikely to improve. Their only hope is that scrutiny surrounding the 2008 Beijing Olympics will encourage China to change its policy.

Van Der Graaf Generator - Refugees

From "The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other" (1970) N. was somewhere years ago and cold: ice locked the people's hearts and made them old. S. was birth to pleasant lands, but dry: I walked the waters' depths and played my mind. E. was dawn, coming alive in the golden sun: the winds came gently, several heads became one in the summertime, though august people sneered... we were at peace, and we cheered We walked along, sometimes hand in hand, between the thin lines marking sea and sand; smiling very peacefully, we began to notice that we could be free, and we moved together to the West. W. is where all days shall someday end; where the colours turn from grey to gold, and you can be with the friends. And light flakes the golden clouds above: West is Mike and Susie, West is where I love. There we shall spend the final days of our lives... tell the same old stories: well, at least we tried. So into the West, smiles on our faces, we'll go; oh! yes, and our apologies to those who'll never really know the Way.... We're refugees, walking away from the life we've known and loved... nothing to do nor say, nowhere to stay; now we are alone. We're refugees, carrying all we own in brown bags, tied up with string... nothing to think, it doesn't mean a thing, but we'll be happy on our own. West is Mike and Susie; West is Mike and Susie; West is where I love, West is refugees' home.

Peter Hammill - "Refugees"

Peter Hammill plays the Van Der Graaf Generator favourite "Refugees", from the unofficial live and solo album "Skeletons of Songs", accompanied by my own video compilation. Recorded live at the All Souls Unitarian Church in Kansas City (USA) in February 1978, Hammill explains that all songs when first written exist in their 'skeleton' form, and when playing live and solo none of the orchestration and overdubbing added later are included. Live and solo is by far my favourite way of listening to Peter Hammill, and this album is amongst my top ten all-time favourite albums without question. I have uploaded some of my other favourite tracks from this album (watch this space for more uploads). Please forgive me if the videos with each upload are similar, because there is a shortage of good footage, and the editing takes some considerable time. I compiled the video myself utilising footage mostly downloaded from YouTube, with some of my own added effects and filters. Please check out my other videos. Comments are most welcome.
